Job description

Leonardo is a global high-tech company and one of the key players in Aerospace, Defence and Security. Headquartered in Italy, Leonardo has over 45,000 employees, of which 8,000 are based at 8 sites throughout the UK. We have an excellent opportunity for a Supportability Engineer.

You will be joining one of our multi discipline engineering teams responsible for the delivery of our family of Surveillance AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) Radars.

The Supportability function has a unique position within our business as it is involved in all the stages of a programme, from Bid, to Development, to Production then Customer Support and eventually disposal. We draw engineers from many different disciplines in addition to Supportability, such as Electronic, Mechanical and Systems Engineering to enhance the Supportability Team.

What you'll do as a Supportability Engineer:

You will be actively involved in analysing, assessing and influencing the supportability characteristics and performance of the next generation of Leonardo products.

You will be responsible for;

  • Engaging with the Integrated Project Teams to deliver Supportability Engineering (SE) work packages covering Reliability, Maintainability and Testability (RM&T) analysis, Support Strategy planning and modelling.
  • Using a variety of analytical techniques and procedures to perform RM&T analysis on integrated systems.
  • Working closely with systems, mechanical, software, RF, electronics and safety engineers to identify and avoid real support related problems on complex systems, before they reach the Customer.
  • Use your engineering talent to grow and develop the supportability community and core skills base.
  • Contribute to continuous process/procedural improvements to help drive out the cost and reputational consequence of failure.
  • Understanding the Customers' operational needs to help guide the development of equipment capable of meeting the needs of future operational environments.
  • Contributing to IPT and Engineering Unit decision making.
  • Provide guidance on through life cost of ownership.
  • Providing domain experience in support of customer and user engagement and product roadmaps.

What we need from you:
Ideally, you will have a degree in a relevant engineering or science disciple and have either worked in industry, defence or have other relevant experience.

If you have any experience in the following areas we would be keen to hear from you and we favour behaviours and experience over a specific toolset. We have an opportunity to tailor the responsibilities of the role to the experience of the candidate so we are open to candidates with all levels of supportability experience and knowledge with aspirations to develop.

  • Working knowledge of RM&T analysis techniques on electronic, power, RF, and mixed technology systems.
  • Failure Modes Effects & Criticality Analysis (FMEA/FMECA) on electronic components/circuits from component level through to system level covering power circuits, analogue, RF and digital assemblies.
  • Failure Reporting and Corrective Action System (FRACAS) data collection and analysis
  • Safety Hazard Identification and Safety Management inc Fault Tree Analysis
  • Support Strategy Planning, LORA utilising support modelling tools (eg OPUS)
  • Bids and Proposals support in provision of information and analysis in a 'Merchant Supply' environment
  • Familiar with statistical data analysis.
  • Creation of beneficial relationships with cross functional colleagues, customers and suppliers

Our team use: PTC Windchill Risk and Reliability; Reliasoft; OPUS; Simlox; Matlab / Simulink; Jira and Python and although expertise is not essential, familiarity with some would be beneficial.
