Overall purpose of the role The Data Architect is responsible for the overall design of the enterprise information architecture, across multiple data types (structured, semi-structured and unstructured), balancing the need for access against security and performance requirements.

This individual focuses primarily on enterprise information requirements: design, access, usage and stewardship.

The position also requires an understanding of emerging regulatory issues surrounding information assets (such as consumer privacy laws, data retention policies, outsourced data and specific industry guidelines - especially in healthcare, insurance and banking). Also included are the development or use of process models, creation or use of information or target data models, interface designs, and development of internal and external checks and controls to ensure proper governance, security and quality of information assets.

Working in our Architecture Team under the Lead Enterprise Architect, the Architect will work with Strategy & Architecture peers, stakeholders, the IT Security team, IT & Business leadership and subject matter experts, to understand, define and implement the enterprise's technology; strategy, processes, and information technology assets.

Scope of role:

  • To take a significant role leading, managing and coaching other team members.
  • Ensure a focus on information/data quality by developing and publishing enterprise data standards such as a common business vocabulary, naming conventions, data standards, transformation rules and related enterprise consistency specifications.
  • Construct, refine and maintain information models, as needed, to meet business requirements.
  • Ensure timely and appropriate information models exist to aid projects.
  • Develop a model management strategy in support of enterprise reuse and data-sharing objectives.
  • Validate audit objectives and assist with creation of audit plans to ensure continued data integrity and transparency.
  • Establish guidelines for reporting procedures on the reuse of enterprise information architecture artifacts.
  • Analyze information to evaluate the effectiveness of controls, determine the accuracy of reports, and monitor the efficiency and security of operations.
  • Review audit reports to ensure findings and recommendations are acted on.
  • Knowledge of problem analysis, structured analysis, and design and programming techniques.
  • Knowledge of or experience with one or more multiuser, multitasking operating systems.
  • Ability to effectively adapt to rapidly changing technology and apply it to business needs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a high level of customer trust and confidence.
  • Strong analytical and conceptual skills; ability to create original concepts/theories for a variety of stakeholders.
  • Ability to analyze project, program and portfolio needs, as well as determine resources needed to meet objectives and solve problems that involve remote and elusive symptoms, often spanning multiple environments in a business area.
  • Knowledge of project planning and management, including scope, time and resource management.
  • Experience creating information policy to support effective design of information systems and use of information across the enterprise.
  • Experience with various information modeling techniques (such as data flow diagrams, entity-relationship diagrams or create/read/update/delete matrices).
  • Familiarity with business intelligence and data warehousing development techniques.
  • High-level understanding of relational database management systems and other data structures.
  • Facilitate consistent business analysis, information acquisition analysis and design, data access analysis and design, archiving and recovery strategies, security, and change management at the enterprise level.

Knowledge/experience:

  • 7 to 10 years of experience in IT, with a minimum of two years in information systems design.
  • In-depth experience designing and implementing information solutions.
  • Knowledgeable in the design and construction of information architectures that enable well-integrated transactional, collaborative and analytical systems.
  • Data/information modeling expertise at the enterprise level.
  • Understanding of common information architecture frameworks (such as Zachman and FEAF).
  • Understanding of differences between relational modeling and object modeling.
  • Understanding of taxonomies and ontologies, as well as the challenges of applying structured techniques (data modeling) to less structured sources.
  • Understanding of metamodels.
