The Job


This is an exciting opportunity for a Server Engineer to join a team, supporting them in the build and maintenance of Windows and Linux servers and clients.

The project is a secure 24/7 service provided by QinetiQ to MOD distributing oceanographic and weather information. There is an on-going upgrade and development programme alongside service delivery, with Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and delivery targets that are aligned with customer need and must be met.

The candidate shall have practical experience of installing and configuring Microsoft and Linux Operating Systems and have demonstrable experience of Microsoft Hyper-V. Working under a Senior Engineer, the candidate will be responsible for the delivery of their own tasks and take responsibility for the task's technical output. The candidate will require DV clearance.

The applicant will be at ease working within a small to medium sized team and be comfortable taking on new tasks outside of their skill set as required by the business: in particular a willingness to work in the wider IT environment. You will be expected to uphold quality and deliver solutions to budget and time constraints. Solutions must be delivered fully documented to a high standard of written work.

Although based in Farnborough, the candidate will be expected to work at other QinetiQ and Customer sites as required - with travel & subsistence provided.

Position Requirement
> Proactively work with technical leads and manage their own tasks to ensure delivered solution follow the defined design process.
> Keep abreast of industry trends and advancements in information technology
> Build and enhance relationships with peers and our infrastructure services
> Be responsible for undertaking project work across the team as required - participation in reference groups, training and research on new functionality etc.
> Willingness to travel within the UK and potentially overseas

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required
>Excellent communication - verbal and written
> Linux build and configuration
> Practical experience in Microsoft server and client implementation, configuration and testing (ideally MCSA Qualified)
> Practical experience of Windows Server Hypervisor (virtualisation), design, implementation, configuration and testing
> Software scripting (Bash and Powershell)
